Khyzy city

Khyzy was founded in 1930. Administrative centre of the region is Khyzy town. Area makes 1,85 thousands km². The nearest region among the mountainous regions of Azerbaijan to Baku is Khyzy. Main part of the region consists of forest. Region joins Caspian Sea in the east. Altiagaj (six trees) National Park, founded in 2004 for protection of flora and fauna of southeast slopes of Greater Caucasus chain, has a natural condition for lynx, bear, wild boar, roe and rare Tur mountain coat. Its possible to meet a variegated animal world in Gilazi Dili and Yashma hunting preserve. Bank part is known for curly pelican, stork and a bittern birds.As other places of Greater Caucasus chain, this place was a settlement for ethnic group tat moving from Iran, too. Afterwards, Molakhanlari (milk drinking) settled in Altiagaj village, the agriculture here is as Russian. Marvellous Beshbarmag (five fingers) rock is situated in this region. Extraordinary lines of the rock, resembling stone hand frightfully lengthened over the ancian caravan road, charms the travellers. Calling of this mountain as Beshbarmag is re;lated with this (five fingers). There are many legends about this mountain. Khidirzinde (Immortal Khidir) sanctuary is located in the peak, among the rocks. Altiagaj is situated in Khyzy region. A roads was constructed here for camel caravans going from Shamakhi to Guba, during Shirvanshahs. Altiagaj was the place that travelers and cameleer pitched camp or rest. Formerly, the “agaj” (tree) word was used as linear measure. This agaj was equal to 7 km. Alti (six) agaj (trees – 7 km) was located in the distance of 42 from Shamakhi. This place was the last station of camel caravans. This is the place where the fewest population settled.There are many historical monuments in the region such as Beshbarmag tower erected in the middle of VIII century, rests of lost city belonging to V century, Sheikh Heydar sepulchre, stony rests of tumbled fence of Khyzy Castle belonging to V century, sacred place in Khalanj village belonging to XV century. Well-known writer and dramatist of Azerbaijan Jafar Jabbarli was born and grown up in Khyzy. Notable poet Mikayil Mushfig also was born and grown up in Khyzy. There is a small museum about him in Khyzy road. Khyzy is also well-known or its natural springs. Region is also known for its beautiful carpets and carpet-bag. Findigkhan village is one of the best producers in this sphere.
