Ujar city

Ujar was founded on January 24, 1939. Centre is Ujar town. Area makes 853 km². Ujer was noted as mediaeval city in Azerbaijan. According to several views, the name of region was derived from Uchar (flies). According to other views, the origin of name was derived from the name of Ucha tribe lived in Shirvan. Besides, there also is one more view that, the name Ucar derives from the Turkic word "Ucqar" meaning "remote", as Ucar was remote from the Shirvanshah capital at Baku, and on the frontier of the Shirvan state. Baku-Tbilisi Railway and main road, as well Ancient Silk Way pass through Ujar and these increase the economic important of the region. Climate is semidesert and dry steppe. Summer is very hot. Goychay and Turyan (Garasu) rivers flow through this region. Liquorices plant is an important in the flora of this region. The roots of this plant are prepared and exported to the foreign countries. Faune of region includes wolf, turaj and pheasant. Carper weaving profession is protected in Upper Shilyan village. Economy mainly consists of cotton-growing, grain-growing, animal-breeding, silkworm-breeding, dry subtropical fruit-growing, wine-growing, melon and gourd growing and poultry-breeding. Main agricultural plants that cultivated in the region are cotton, corn, rice paddy, grain, tomato, cucumber, potato, onion, egg-plant, Lucerne and etc. Root of liquorices was processing in Ujar Liquorices Plant, constructed in 1902. This plant is the first industrial enterprises in the region’s history. It operated until 1956. In 1956, it operated under the name of cannery. At present, it operates under the same name.
